Why EXPOSED Belongs in the Museum Gift Shop

Art made on authentic X-ray film, for the visitor who wants to take something real home.

A museum visit rarely ends at the exit. It ends in the gift shop, where a visitor decides whether the experience becomes a memory or a keepsake. Most shops fill that moment with the same magnets, mugs and pencils. We think visitors deserve something with more depth, and we think museums do too.

1. A product with a real story

Every EXPOSED piece is produced on authentic X-ray film, the same kind of material hospitals used to make invisible structures visible. That film is becoming less common as medicine moves to digital systems, so each piece is also a small, physical record of a changing medium.

For a shop, that means staff and visitors can answer “what is this?” in one sentence. The answer leads to a conversation, and that conversation can lead to a sale.

2. It fits the museums people already love

The story runs from Röntgen’s 1895 hand radiograph to the digital era, which makes EXPOSED a natural fit for science and medical museums, history of medicine collections and technology exhibitions. The Signature collection (Unicorn, Butterfly, Octopus, Angel) speaks to natural history and art museums as well, where the line between scientific illustration and fine art is part of the visitor’s interest.

3. It looks like nothing else on the shelf

X-ray film is translucent. It reacts to light differently than a paper print, and its tonal density shows best when it is framed and lit properly. Each artwork is output at 650 dpi, so fine detail holds up when a visitor looks closely.

On a shop wall or in a display case, lit pieces draw people in. A visitor who stops to look is already halfway to buying.

4. A gift people actually keep

Gift shop buyers are often shopping for someone else: a colleague, a parent, a friend who loves odd and beautiful things. An EXPOSED piece is a gift with a story attached, which is exactly what people look for when they want a present that doesn’t feel generic. It is also meant to be displayed, not stored in a drawer.

5. Editions made for your museum

Beyond the Signature collection, we create custom X-ray art editions from supplied artwork. Museums can turn a signature object, an iconic specimen or an exhibition image into a limited run available only in their shop. Film sizes range from 8 × 10 in to 14 × 17 in (20 × 25 cm to 35 × 43 cm), depending on current film stock. Optional extras include a custom insert card, branded sleeve, archive reference and certificate of authenticity.

An exclusive edition gives visitors a reason to buy now rather than “maybe online later”, and it gives the museum something no other shop can offer.

6. Simple to work with

Wholesale pricing, minimum quantities and lead times are quoted by project, depending on edition size, packaging and current X-ray film availability. Custom projects follow a clear process: you share the idea, we prepare the artwork, you approve a proof, and we produce the edition.
