Before radiology lived on monitors, it lived on film.
For generations, medical imaging meant a physical sheet clipped to a lightbox: dark, translucent and capable of revealing structures the eye could never see on its own.
That material changed medicine. It also created a visual language so distinctive that even people with no medical training recognise it instantly.
Today, most diagnostic imaging is viewed digitally. The physical film that once defined radiology has largely disappeared from everyday hospital use.
That disappearance is part of why EXPOSED exists.
What medical imaging film actually is
Medical imaging film is not one single technology. Over time, several different film systems were used to turn diagnostic information into a visible physical image.
Traditional X-ray film used a polyester base coated with light-sensitive emulsion. After exposure, the image had to be chemically processed before it could be read on a lightbox.
Later systems moved away from wet processing. Dry laser imaging film receives a digital image from an imaging system, is exposed inside a medical laser imager and is then thermally developed without a conventional wet-chemistry processor.

From darkrooms to dry laser film
Early radiography depended on film, processing chemistry and darkroom workflow. The physical image was not simply a convenient output — it was the diagnostic record itself.
As imaging became increasingly digital, medical film changed too. Dry laser systems allowed hospitals to produce high-quality hard copies from digital studies without the traditional wet processing associated with older X-ray film.
The result was still a physical diagnostic film, designed for precise grayscale reproduction and viewing with transmitted light, but the route from image data to film had changed.
Why the material looks different from a normal print
Medical imaging film was engineered for a specific job: reproduce subtle differences in density clearly enough for diagnostic viewing.
That gives it characteristics ordinary paper prints do not have.
The image is viewed partly through transmitted light. Deep blacks, fine grayscale transitions and translucent areas respond to the environment around them. Put the same sheet against a bright window, a wall or a lightbox and it can read differently each time.
For EXPOSED, that physical behaviour matters as much as the image itself.
Why medical imaging film is disappearing
The answer is simple: digital systems are more practical for modern healthcare.
Digital radiography and PACS — Picture Archiving and Communication Systems — let hospitals capture, store, retrieve and share images without maintaining large physical film archives. A scan can be available across departments or locations almost immediately, without creating another physical sheet.
For clinical workflow, that is an enormous advantage.
As digital viewing became standard, lightboxes disappeared from walls, film libraries shrank and the need to routinely produce physical medical film fell with them.
A disappearing visual language
Something else disappeared at the same time.
For decades, the physical X-ray film was one of the most recognisable objects in medicine: a sheet held to light, revealing bone, structure and internal form beneath the surface.
Digital imaging preserved the medical information but changed the object. The image became something viewed on a workstation rather than something physically held, illuminated and archived.
That shift is one reason the medium feels increasingly unusual outside specialist settings.
What EXPOSED does with it
EXPOSED takes the physical qualities of medical imaging film and moves them into a different context.
We do not simply apply an X-ray-style filter to an image and print it on paper.
EXPOSED artworks are produced on authentic medical imaging film, using the density, translucency and grayscale behaviour of the material itself as part of the finished piece.
The original purpose was diagnosis. The new purpose is discovery.
Instead of revealing a fracture or pathology, the medium can reveal the structure of an animal, flower, object, symbol or personal image in a new way.
