Why the brain
Medical imaging film was built to reveal what the eye couldn’t see. But the brain sits at an interesting edge of that promise.
Traditional X-ray radiography is exceptionally good at showing bone and differences in density, but much less effective at separating the soft tissues inside the skull. The organ most associated with thought, identity and consciousness was therefore one of the structures that ordinary X-ray film could never fully reveal.
Later technologies changed that. CT made cross-sectional imaging possible, while MRI brought dramatically greater soft-tissue contrast. The brain became visible in ways traditional radiography had never allowed.
That gap is what makes BRAIN interesting as a subject for this material specifically. It is a piece about the edge of what an imaging format can reveal — produced on the format itself.
What it looks like
Stripped of soft-tissue colour and everyday context, the form becomes almost architectural: folds and ridges rendered as line, density and structure.
That idea runs through the entire Signature series — take something familiar, reduce it to structure, and let it become unfamiliar again.
Produced on authentic medical imaging film, BRAIN carries the same shifting quality as every Signature piece. Density and translucency change with the light around it, giving the physical film a presence that an ordinary paper print does not have.
